Microsoft's Timing

Asano and I have discussed and debated the merits and pitfalls of the Xbox 360's early release several times, and we've generally come to the same conclusion. Our conclusion is basically that, despite the risks and drawbacks, the early release is Microsoft's best move.

Essentially, in the current generation, they are building momentum and a strong reputation, but they are losing money. And as Asano pointed out in his post about innovation, the 360 and the PS3 are both attempting to be the core of consumer entertainment and most consumers don't need to buy both. The Xbox is already trailing the PS2 in terms of market share, so to capitalize on their momentum, to avoid the expensive competition, and to level the playing field, the 360 almost had to launch first.

My point, however, is that I just read an article on 1up.com that presents some information that I hadn't considered. Basically the author argues that Microsoft's strategy was sound, but it still shot itself in the foot with the early launch. Check it out.
